Mac

There are two separate steps:

In GarageBand on Mac, select an audio track that uses an electric guitar patch, click the Smart Controls button in the control bar. Click the Amp Designer button in the Smart Controls menu bar. You can also use the Amp Designer plug-in on audio and software instrument tracks. Oct 11, 2017  Crank up the bottom end with Bass Amp Designer, or mix and match electric guitar amps, cabinets, and pedals with Amp Designer and Pedalboard. Control GarageBand and play any software instrument wirelessly on your iPad using the Logic Remote app. Use iCloud to keep your GarageBand projects updated across multiple Mac computers, or even import.

Output Selection:

Load a GaraBand Project and select the Audio Interface that you have hooked up to your stereo system. Make sure that your Project played through that interface properly.

Guitar Input Monitoring:

Select that Audio Device for the input in the GarageBand Preferences that you have hooked up your Guitar. Create a new Guitar Track in the New Tracks Dialog, open the Smart Controls where you set the input controls. And here is the important part: Enable the Input Monitoring Button (orange one). It is available on the Track Header and also in the Smart Controls Inspector. This lets you 'listen to your input', basically using your GarageBand as an amp.
